What is a Peel Strength Test? [Measurement Methods and Testing Equipment]

Peel strength testing is a method for evaluating the adhesive bond between two materials by measuring the force required to separate them by peeling. It is widely used for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, labels, film laminates, and packaging materials.

What is Peel Strength?

Peel strength is the force per unit width required to separate two bonded materials by peeling one away from the other at a defined angle. It is typically expressed in N/mm or N/25 mm (N per 25 mm width).

Peel Test Methods

90° Peel Test

The flexible substrate is peeled from the rigid substrate at a 90° angle. One of the most common peel test configurations. Standardized in JIS Z 0237 and ASTM D6862.

180° Peel Test

The substrate is bent back and peeled at a 180° angle. Commonly used for pressure-sensitive adhesive tape evaluation. Standardized in JIS Z 0237 and ASTM D903.

T-Peel Test

Both substrates are flexible and are peeled apart in a T-shape. Used for flexible film laminates and flexible packaging materials. Standardized in ASTM D1876.
