A hazardous area (classified location) is a location where flammable gases, vapors, or dusts may be present in sufficient quantity to pose an explosion or fire risk. Equipment used in these areas must meet specific flameproof or explosion-proof construction requirements.

Hazardous Area Classification
Hazardous areas are classified into zones based on the probability and duration of the presence of an explosive atmosphere:
| Zone | Description |
|---|---|
| Zone 0 | Explosive atmosphere present continuously or for long periods |
| Zone 1 | Explosive atmosphere likely to occur in normal operation |
| Zone 2 | Explosive atmosphere unlikely in normal operation; if it occurs, it will be infrequent and short-lived |
For dust explosions: Zone 20 (continuous), Zone 21 (likely), Zone 22 (unlikely but possible).
Flameproof Enclosure (Ex d)
Flameproof enclosure (IEC/JIS designation “Ex d”) is a protection concept in which the electrical equipment is enclosed in a housing strong enough to withstand an internal explosion without transmitting the explosion to the surrounding explosive atmosphere.
Key requirements for flameproof enclosures:
- The enclosure must withstand the pressure of an internal explosion
- Flame gaps (joint clearances) must be designed to quench any escaping flame before it can ignite the external atmosphere
- Certification is required from an approved testing body; in Japan, certified by the Technology Institute of Industrial Safety (TIIS)
