Standards Related to Friction and Wear Testing [JIS K 7125 and Others]

Friction and wear testing is governed by a range of Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), ISO standards, and ASTM standards. Selecting the correct standard for your application is the first step in designing a reliable test.

JIS K 7125 — Plastics Films and Sheets: Friction Coefficient

JIS K 7125 (ISO 8295) specifies the method for measuring the static and kinetic friction coefficients of plastic films and sheets. The sled method is used, in which a weighted sled covered with the film specimen slides over another film specimen at a defined speed. This standard is widely applied in packaging film, agricultural film, and industrial film quality control.

Key conditions: Load 200 g, speed 100 mm/min, 23°C / 50% RH

JIS K 5600-5-4 — Paints: Scratch Hardness (Pencil Method)

JIS K 5600-5-4 (ISO 15184) specifies the pencil method for evaluating the scratch hardness of paint coatings. A pencil of defined hardness grade is pressed against the coated surface at a 45° angle with a 750 g load. The hardest grade that does not scratch the surface is reported as the pencil hardness.

JIS K 7317:2022 — Plastics: Scratch Hardness of Functional Films

JIS K 7317:2022 specifies a more reproducible scratch hardness test for plastic functional films using a diamond indenter. It was developed specifically for optical films, hard coats, and display films where the pencil method lacks sufficient precision. See our dedicated article: What is JIS K 7317:2022?

ASTM D1894 — Standard Test Method for Static and Kinetic Friction

ASTM D1894 is the U.S. equivalent of JIS K 7125 for measuring static and kinetic friction coefficients of plastic films and sheeting. Widely referenced in international trade and export quality specifications.

Other Relevant Standards

  • ISO 12137-2:1997 — Paints and varnishes: Scratch resistance, pendulum method
  • ASTM D2197 — Adhesion of organic coatings by scrape adhesion
  • ISO 8251 — Anodic oxidation coatings on aluminum: abrasion resistance
  • JIS H 8682-1 — Anodic oxide coatings on aluminum: abrasion resistance test
  • ASTM D4060 — Abrasion resistance of organic coatings by the Taber abraser
