Main Jigs & Indenters — Video Guide

Scratch Needle (Stylus)

A stylus for measuring coating hardness and adhesion, and the scratch resistance of various materials.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: Available in diamond or sapphire, with a wide range of tip radii (0.001–1.0 mm).
  • Applications: Ideal for measuring the peel load of coating films and for continuous scratch testing.
  • Operation: Insert the needle into the holder hole and fix it firmly with the screw.

Ball Indenter

Suited to high-pressure point-contact testing and to clearly distinguishing differences between samples.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: A variety of ball materials and sizes are available.
  • Tip: After testing, rotate the ball to expose a fresh surface for reuse.
  • Operation: How to set the ball and fix it to the arm.

ASTM Flat Indenter

A flat indenter with a 63.5 × 63.5 mm contact face, compliant with ASTM D1894.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: Ideal for friction testing over a wide contact area.
  • Preparation: Adjust the specimen size to about 63.5 × 120 mm (for sheet samples).
  • Operation: How to fix the jig and its behavior during measurement.

30 mm Flat Indenter

A standard indenter that supports both sheet and flat-plate specimens.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: Supports wrap-fixing of sheets and double-sided-tape fixing of flat plates.
  • Preparation: Adjusting the specimen to about 100 mm long makes it easier to fix.
  • Operation: Mounting on the balance arm and the leveling procedure.

Blade Holder

Fixes wiper rubber or spatula-shaped samples at an angle close to actual use for testing.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: Can be fixed at an angle relative to the horizontal.
  • Operation: How to clamp and fix the sample.
  • Check: Leveling the balance arm using a spirit level.

Sand Eraser Holder

Fixes a cylindrical sand eraser to measure friction changes caused by wear of the specimen surface.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: Designed to hold the sand eraser securely.
  • Operation: Fixing the roller shaft and the setting method.
  • Applications: Mar evaluation of LCDs, plastics, painted surfaces, etc.

T-Peel Unit

A dedicated unit for performing T-peel tests on various tapes and adhesives.

Key points / procedure
  • Configuration: Two chucks — one on the balance-arm side and one on the moving-table side.
  • Important: Fixing and releasing by the orientation of the pickup knob.
  • Adjustment: Importance of balance-arm height and leveling.

Artificial Leather Holder

For testing that simulates environments touched by human fingers, such as smartphone screens and car interiors.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: The contact surface is rounded rather than flat (mimicking a finger).
  • Preparation: Cut the specimen to fit inside the holder.
  • Operation: Simple fixing with the screw cap.

Tack Roll Unit

Quantifies the stickiness (tack) of adhesives, flooring, cosmetics and more via the rolling resistance of a roll.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: Measurement uses the self-weight of a stainless steel (SUS304) roll.
  • Applications: Evaluating the aging of adhesion and residual tack.
  • Operation: Mounting and adjusting the whole unit.

Steel Wool Holder

Fixes steel wool, gauze, rubber and similar materials to evaluate surface wear resistance.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: Supports φ12 mm and φ27 mm contact faces.
  • Preparation: Can also fix irregular materials such as sponge or fiber.
  • Operation: Push-in setting into the holder.

45° Pencil Holder

A holder that fixes the pencil at a 45° angle, compliant with JIS K5600 (pencil scratch hardness test).

Key points / procedure
  • Features: For evaluating coating-film strength.
  • Operation: Accurate adjustment of pencil protrusion using a dedicated guide.
  • Procedure: Attach guide → insert pencil → fix → remove guide.

Peel Clip

A clip used for peel testing of adhesive tape and for evaluating coating-film adhesion.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: A spring-clip mechanism grips the edge of tape or paperboard with one touch.
  • Applications: Suited to tests that apply a vertical pulling force, such as 90° peel tests.
  • Operation: Insert into the balance-arm tip and tighten the side screw to fix.

Roller Jig

Measures the friction coefficient of cylindrical samples such as rubber or metal rollers.

Key points / procedure
  • Features: Line contact on the cylinder side prevents uneven contact for stable measurement.
  • Operation: Set the roller shaft in the jig groove and tighten the screw with a screwdriver.
  • Applications: Evaluating the slip of printer feed rollers and conveyance rollers.
